NAAR is a creative platform aiming to support artists internationally with a focus on the Maghreban contemporary art and music scenes. The visual identity is built around a homemade typeface and a logo that’s halfway between an abstract form and a lettering: it constitutes the name of the collective in the Arabic script but is not immediately recognizable as a word.

The research held at the Atelier national de recherche typographique between october 2016 and march 2018 explores the evolution of Arabic typography from the early printing techniques to the digital era. In addition to the constraints of unsuitable printing methods, the conflictual encouter with the Latin script had a significant impact on the way designers approach the Arabic script.
